Should You Skip Breakfast If Your Blood Sugar is High in the Morning?

I get a lot of questions about whether it is okay to eat breakfast knowing your blood sugar is high in the morning.

And my answer is…YES! Of course, we want you to eat your breakfast! However, we do need to uncover why your blood sugar is high and what we can do about it.

If your fasting levels are running over 150 g/dl, you will likely need some treatment to help lower those numbers. That could be trying to lose weight to improve your insulin sensitivity (using your own body’s insulin more efficiently) as an option. Or you could use the help from medications like metformin or a long-acting insulin such as Lantus, Levemir or Tresiba. A supplement that is recently being studied to help lower blood sugar levels, particularly in the morning, is called Berberine. Read the previous post all about it for more information. You should always take your medication as prescribed and if it’s not meeting your needs, contact your doctor immediately.

So, if you are running a tad high, some recommendations for a balanced breakfast would be:

  • 2 slices of avocado toast on whole grain bread with pico
  • A veggie scramble with 1 cup of berries
  • 1.5 cups of plain cheerios/kix/chex/rice crispy cereal with Fairlife or low carb milk, or a high protein shake
  • 1 cup cottage cheese with sliced peaches
  • A fried egg on an English muffin with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese and tomato
  • 2 boiled eggs with 1 cup of cooked oatmeal with cinnamon and nutmeg
  • 1 cup of greek yogurt with ½ a cup of berries

Never feel like you need to avoid food because of your blood sugar levels. We need to address why they are high so you can feel comfortable eating a healthy, balanced diet while still managing your diabetes.
