There are 3 basic tips when it comes to managing your diabetes.
1. You have tools, and it’s your choice on which ones to use. Some tools you can use to manage your diabetes could be diet, exercise, hydration, oral medications, injectable medications and/or insulin. Please remember that It’s your choice on which ones you would like to use. You’re the driver of your health care choices and it’s your ultimate decision on how you’d like to manage your diabetes.
2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! It seems so simple, but the first thing I recommend if someone has a high blood sugar reading is to assess their hydration. If someone is dehydrated their blood sugar levels will automatically be elevated. This is one of the easiest, cheapest and fastest ways to lower your blood sugar. Hydrate ideally with water and avoid sweetened beverages as sugar has a dehydrating effect on your body plus it just increases your blood sugar levels that much more.
3. Stay in tune. Sometimes life can get in the way and we’ll skip an appointment with our doctor, miss an exercise class or forget to take our medication. It’s important to recognize that you will always be busy and something will always get in the way of managing your diabetes. It’s not easy having diabetes, but making YOURSELF a priority and putting your health needs first is the ultimate goal. Find someone you can rely on to help hold you accountable and keep you on track – whether that’s a loved one, friend, neighbour or health professional. It’s essential to prioritize you NOW in order to prevent complications later.
