Weight Loss: When the Tables Turn

I would have to say the majority of my clients are working towards weight loss, but I do see the same desperate struggle with a few clients that are seeking to gain weight. And I frequently see people who have tried to lose weight most of their adult life become frail as they age and try to gain weight back. Although the issues are opposites, the cause is the same; energy imbalance

For people seeking weight loss, they have too much caloric or energy intake for the metabolic needs of their body. That’s when we try to be mindful of how many calories they consume, the caloric density of their foods, and also how active they are to try to “burn down” some of the energy they are consuming.

For people seeking weight gain, they are in an energy deficit for the metabolic needs of their body. It can happen for a variety of reasons but common ones are: decreased appetite, altered sense of taste, cancer, depression, and Parkinson’s disease. Each cause can come with a specific nutrition plan to help combat their weight loss.

Despite which category you are in, or even if you are perfectly happy with the weight you are at, know that with the help of a dietitian we can aid you in your specific health and nutrition goals.
